Power station or gas generator for home backup?

Get a power station if your outages are short and you want to keep a fridge, a CPAP, the internet and phones going. Get a gas generator if your outages last days, or you need to run a well pump, a furnace blower or a big air conditioner. Many homes end up with both.
The real difference is the size of the tank
A 1 kWh power station holds about as much energy as a fridge uses in a day. Once it is empty, you need the grid or solar to refill it. A gallon of gasoline run through a small inverter generator makes several kWh, and you can keep pouring in more. That is the whole trade: a battery is easy and clean but small. Gas is loud and fussy but close to unlimited.

Choose a power station if
- Your outages are usually under a day.
- You live in an apartment or condo, where a generator is not allowed or not possible.
- You need power for a CPAP or a home office, where silence and instant switchover matter.
- You cannot safely store gasoline.
Choose a generator if
- You lose power for days after storms.
- You need to run 240V loads, a well pump, or several big appliances at once.
- You have a safe outdoor spot for it and a place to store fuel.

Using both together
This is the setup that makes long outages bearable. Run the generator for an hour or two in the daytime to cool the fridge and recharge the power station. Safety note: generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which kills people every storm season. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says to run a generator outside only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away. Never plug a generator or a power station into a wall outlet to feed the house. Home wiring needs a transfer switch or interlock fitted by a licensed electrician.
